A Roman colony and its territory were defined according to a precise piano regolatore (planning scheme) which marked out city limits on the ground along with agricultural plots destined to be assigned to future citizens. This geometric operation known as centuriazione was carried out on the land by agrimensores, the land surveyors/topographers of antiquity, who utilized an instrument called “groma” to measure, align and lay out boundaries.
Thanks to cartography and aerial photography the traces of centuriazione are still very visible, particularly on the plain between Sesto Fiorentino and the Arno, composed of modern property limits, roads and ditches.
