Who founded Florentia? The question is still a subject of debate. While in fact, literary sources attribute the decision to establish the colony based on an agricultural law of Julius Cesar, archaeological digs have located the remains of defensive walls establishing the date of their construction to the Augustan age. The organization of the town, which is highly visible in aerial photography, recalls the typical plan of military camps, with two main roads, Cardo Maximus (vie Roma-Calimala ) and the Decumanus Maximus (vie Strozzi-degli Speziali) oriented according to cardinal points that intersect at right angles in piazza del Foro.
