Looming over Piazza della Repubblica is the Colonna dell’Abbondanza (abundance) or Dovizia indicating the exact center (umbilicus) of ancient Florentia. The original piece dating from the Roman era was destroyed in the 1400’s and was substituted with a new column, surmounted by a statue of Donatello representing a female figure holding a cornucopia, symbol of prosperity and fortune. In 1721, it collapsed due to exposure to severe weather, and was substituted by a sculpture by Giovan Battista Foggini, which was removed during the course of work related to “Firenze Capitale”. Today the column is surmounted by a copy from the mid 1900’s.
