For the Romans, daily visits to the thermal baths meant more than just time dedicated to personal hygiene, being part of their social life where they submitted themselves to a variety of treatments. From the dressing room entering the room for the cold baths (frigidarium), proceeding to that which was moderately warmed (tepidarium) on to the calidario or the room for the hot baths near the furnace. During the Imperial era the thermal baths were open from the late morning until sunset, equipped with gardens, libraries, conference rooms and entertainment spaces. Working beneath the structure’s management were personnel who collected modest entrance fees, maintained the heating system, were masseurs and specialists in physical treatments.
